The Ziz River is a well-known river in eastern Morocco. It originates in the High Atlas Mountains near Midelt and extends for about 280 km, reaching Errachidia and Tafilalet. The river nourishes important oases (such as the Tafilalet Oasis) and has major dams built on it, like the Hassan Addakhil Dam, which provides water for drinking and agriculture. Historically, the Ziz River was an essential passage for trade caravans linking northern Morocco with the Sahara Desert The Ziz Valley played a major role in Morocco's trade history, especially with ancient caravans: • Caravans coming from northern Morocco or from Fez would pass through Midelt and follow the Ziz Valley to reach the south. • This route reached the Tafilalt oases, known as one of the largest oases in the world. • From Tafilalt, caravans continued toward the Sahara Desert, and from there, they traveled to Mali, Niger, and exchanging salt, gold, and dates.

A clear river, the Todra, flows through the gorge, creating a refreshing contrast to the dramatic red rock walls. The area is famous among hikers and rock climbers for its many climbing routes, as well as for travelers who come simply to enjoy the breathtaking scenery.
