Monarch butterflies travel around 4,500 kilometers from Canada and the United States to take refuge in the warmer forests of eastern Mexico, the ideal setting for hibernation, rest, and reproduction. El Rosario sanctuary is part of the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve. The 2024-2025 monarch butterfly period began on November 27, 2024 and will extend until the end of March 2025. After 3.5 hours driving to this sanctuary We will arrive to the most popular in Michoacan. We will have 1 local guide (who doesn't speak english) for our private hike inside the forest. Our bilingual host/driver is always with you who translate the local guide explanations. Around 10 am the butterflies start to wake up and start to fly in all the forest even in the parking area. The path has a distance of 1200 meters and the ascent is 200 meters. You can rent a horse if you want to take an advantage. You need to wear comfortable and closed shoes, preferably boots. We will stay here around 2.5 hours. Also in the sanctuary we can find some local people selling local food like quesadillas.
