Umi Jigoku (Sea Hell) is the largest hot spring among Beppu’s famous “Hells.” It features a beautiful cobalt-blue pond and is designated as a national scenic spot. Despite its calm appearance, the water temperature reaches around 98°C (208°F)! It was formed about 1,200 years ago by the eruption of Mt. Tsurumi.
Kamado Jigoku is a unique spot where you can experience several different types of hot springs all in one place. From bubbling mud pools to bright blue waters and even mysterious ponds that change color depending on the weather, it’s full of variety and surprises.
Miyuki-zaka Street is a charming walking path through the heart of the Kannawa Onsen area. It’s the main route of the “Hell Tour,” lined with local attractions, shops, and traditional hot spring facilities.
Enjoy a breathtaking viewpoint where you can see steam rising from Kannawa Onsen, with Mt. Tsurumi and Mt. Ogi in the background.
We’ll also stop by a popular handmade pork bun shop, started by local women in 2002. Their specialty is “jigoku-mushi” pork buns, steamed using natural hot spring steam—super tasty and unique!
Yumetake is an eco-friendly cooling system developed at Hyotan Onsen in Beppu. It uses bamboo branches to naturally cool down hot spring water that’s nearly 100°C (212°F), bringing it to a comfortable bathing temperature of around 47°C (117°F)—without adding any water.
You can also relax your feet at a nearby foot bath at Ideyu-zaka Pocket Park. Don’t worry—your guide will provide towels.
