We start our tour in Lazdynai, the 'Hazelnut Grove' planned Soviet neighbourhood planted right in amongst the trees and forests overlooking Vilnius. In 1974 Lazdynai was awarded the highest award of the time in the Soviet Union, which was the first for a mass-built residential area and in 1993 Lazdynai was recognized as a cultural heritage site and entered in the Register of Cultural Values due to architectural and urban planning solutions. To this day, the district is protected due to its historical significance, unique landscape and greenery.

We will walk to the edge of the riverbank in Lazdynai and look out over the city from one of the best vantages there is, with the Vingis Park running arena and stage area right beneath us across the river.

    Birstonas

We travel to the the spa town of Birštonas, where mineral water springs have created a destination mentioned even since the times of the Teutonic Knights (1382 reads, "the fartmstead at the salty water"), with the following centuries of Polish connection and Russian rule developing the town into a place of rest and relaxation. We will eat here, potentially climb Lithuania's highest observation tower and check out the water graduation tower.

    Grutas Park

Grūtas Park is a socialist realism museum with a sculpture garden of Soviet-era statues and other Soviet ideological relics from the times of the Soviet occupation. Founded in 2001 by a local businessman Viliumas Malinauskas, the park sits in the the wetlands of the Dzūkija National Park. Many of its features are re-creations of Soviet Gulag prison camps: wooden paths, guard towers, and barbed-wire fences.
