Bogd Khan Mountain is one of the world’s oldest protected mountains. Historical records show that it has been protected since at least the 13th century. It is designated as a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, recognized for its rich biodiversity and ecological importance. It is the very first of Mongolia’s 10 State Sacred Mountains. Located at the southernmost edge of the Siberian taiga (boreal forest), it marks the transition between the Siberian forest ecosystem and the Mongolian steppe, creating a unique mix of plant and animal life.
Manzushir monastery was founded in 1733 and was largely destroyed during the religious purges of 1937. It was regarded as one of the finest monasteries in Mongolia, reflecting its importance as a major center of Buddhism and its beautiful mountain setting. It served as an important center for Buddhist education, traditional medicine, and religious ceremonies. In 1992, the Summer Palace was reconstructed by the local community using historical photographs of the original palace.
Tsetsee Gun is the highest peak of Bogd Khan Mountain, standing at 2,268 meters (7,440 feet) above sea level. From the summit, you can enjoy views of the Tuul River to the north and a panoramic view of approximately 30% of Ulaanbaatar. In every other direction, the landscape stretches across the wild. At the summit stands a revered shamanic ovoo (stone cairn), a sacred site where visitors traditionally pay their respects according to local custom. After Ulaanbaatar was relocated to the north of Bogd Khan Mountain in 1778, Mongolian Buddhist leader and nobles began holding religious ceremonies here twice a year to honor the mountain. Every five years, the President of Mongolia participates in a state ceremony at this sacred ovoo, reflecting its enduring cultural, spiritual, and national significance.
