Spend the morning strolling through the town, explore Interlaken’s world-famous Hohematte before the crowds arrive and have a coffee with a view of the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau mountains. As this is a self-guided tour, please ensure that you arrive at the Interlaken Ost boat pier by 10:50 a.m. from where your boat will depart at 11:07 a.m.
We’ve booked you a first-class ticket with access to the upper deck – the captain will be waiting to welcome you on board and show you the way. The vintage Lotschberg paddle steamer, built in 1914, is the jewel of Lake Brienz and a great way to make your way across the turquoise-blue lake, surrounded by the mountains of the Bernese Oberland. Tip: During the trip, make your way to the middle of the lower deck to see the heart of the award-winning restoration: the original engine from 1914 in action. Keep an eye out for the famous boat dock from the Netflix series Crash Landing on You in Iseltwald, as well as the Grandhotel Giessbach, built on the cliffs in 1873 and a view of the impressive Giessbach Falls. Important: Please do not leave the boat at any of the stops, your next adventure awaits you in Brienz! Look to port (left in the direction of travel). Towards the north you’ll see the tall, pointed peak of the Rothorn mountain, which is where we’re headed.
After leaving the paddle steamer in Brienz, the base station of the steam-powered Brienzer Rothorn Bahn is just a few steps away and you’ll find your ticket with a seat reservation in the provided tour documents. The train itself dates back to 1891 and along its hour-long ride you’ll pass through the pristine mountainside of streams, meadows and forests. The view from the summit of the Brienzer Rothorn is a spectacular panorama of the lake and the Bernese Alps, with over 700 visible mountain peaks. You can spend the next 2,5 hours at the Rothorn Kulm mountain restaurant, with everything from quick snacks to gourmet menus, as well as with a short hike to the viewing platform. At 4:28 p.m. take the sunset train ride down into the valley, where we’ll be waiting to take you back to your accommodation.
