What to expect
In 1992, Pope John Paul II visited the Basilica of Our Lady of Altagrace in Higüey, a sacred site and the spiritual center of the Dominican Republic. Opened in 1971, this Basilica is an example of impressive modern architecture, with its large 45-meter dome and beautiful stained glass windows that fill the interior with light and color. During his visit, the Pope celebrated a mass, reaffirming the devotion to the Virgin of Altagrace. The Basilica remains a pilgrimage site and a key religious tourist destination, symbolizing the faith and identity of the Dominican people. The papal visit left an indelible mark on the history of the country.
