Known as “Okyo-ji Temple,” Daijyo-ji Temple is home to 165 wall paintings by Edo period painter Maruyama Okyo and his 12 disciples, all of which are designated as National Important Cultural Properties of Japan. Centering on the eleven-faced Kannon Bosatsu (National Important Cultural Property) in the Buddhist room, the fusuma paintings in the thirteen rooms are a magnificent representation of the world of Buddha, or mandala, by incorporating the three-dimensional space of the rooms. The paintings, which are painted only with ink but appear to be colored, and the “eight-way glare” technique, in which the painted figure's body appears to change direction depending on the viewer's position, are also highlights of Okyo's signature painting technique.
