Your tour begins in the heart of Queenstown. As we head out of town, your private guide will set the tone for the day, offering insights into the region’s landscapes, legends, and history as the scenery begins to unfold.
We follow the shoreline of Lake Wakatipu on one of New Zealand’s most scenic roads. With the Remarkables mountain range towering to our left and the lake stretching endlessly to the right, you’ll enjoy a stop for breathtaking panoramic photos.
We pass through the dramatic Devil’s Staircase, a winding clifftop section of road known for its rugged terrain and photo-worthy perspectives.
After more stunning lake, river, and farmland views, we arrive in the township of Te Anau—home to New Zealand’s second-largest lake. Enjoy a refreshment break and possibly spot local birds or wildlife. We'll also stop at Te Anau Downs, the historic starting point of the Milford Track.
Entering Fiordland National Park, we stop in the glacier-carved Eglinton Valley. Surrounded by towering mountains and vast open plains, it’s a landscape straight from a fantasy film.
A short walk takes us to the famous Mirror Lakes, where on a calm day you’ll capture perfect reflections of the Earl Mountains in the still waters.
Further along the Milford Road, we stop at tranquil Lake Gunn—renowned for its stillness, natural beauty, and peaceful atmosphere.
We follow the Hollyford River, a fast-moving waterway lined with mossy boulders and native forest. Nearby, Falls Creek introduces the first of many dramatic waterfalls on this route.
As we climb into the heart of the Darran Mountains, we pause for photos of the towering peaks. This area is also home to the kea—New Zealand’s cheeky alpine parrot.
We travel through the incredible Homer Tunnel, a hand-carved engineering marvel. On rainy days, hundreds of waterfalls cascade down the cliffs as we emerge into the glacial valley leading to Milford Sound.
We arrive at Milford Sound, where you’ll board a 2-hour scenic nature cruise with Cruise Milford, consistently rated as the No.1 cruise operator. Enjoy close-up views of waterfalls, wildlife, and towering cliffs.
While on the cruise, marvel at the grandeur of Mitre Peak—Milford Sound’s most iconic mountain. Its steep, symmetrical face rises dramatically from the fiord, creating unforgettable photo moments.
On the return journey, we stop at Pops View Lookout for panoramic views of the Southern Alps and the Hollyford Valley—near the start of the famous Routeburn Track. Your guide will share stories of Māori explorers who once crossed these lands.
As we make our way back to Queenstown, your guide continues to share insights and stories. The return drive is fully guided with rest breaks, photo stops, and plenty of time to relax and reflect on the day's adventure.
