Your journey begins with a scenic drive from Moshi or Arusha to the Londorossi Gate (approx. 3–4 hours). After registration, a shorter drive takes you to the Lemosho trailhead where your adventure kicks off. Trekking through lush rainforest, watch for colobus monkeys and unique birdlife before arriving at Mti Mkubwa Camp nestled in the forest. Your chef will prepare a warm dinner, and you'll rest in a cozy tented camp under a canopy of stars.
Begin with a hearty breakfast before ascending out of the rainforest and into the moorland zone. The trail becomes steeper and more open as you gain altitude. Along the way, catch your first views of Kibo Peak and the majestic Shira Plateau. By mid-afternoon, you’ll reach Shira 1 Camp, where hot tea and dinner await. Breathe in the fresh mountain air and enjoy panoramic sunset views.
Today is a shorter trek allowing for better acclimatization. You’ll cross the Shira Plateau, one of the highest alpine plateaus in the world. The terrain is rocky with dramatic views of Mt. Meru in the distance. Arrive early at Shira 2 Camp, giving you time to rest or take an optional acclimatization hike. Enjoy a nourishing dinner under a clear, star-studded sky.
This critical acclimatization day involves a climb to the Lava Tower (4,600m), followed by a descent to Barranco Camp. The high point helps your body adjust to altitude before sleeping lower — a key strategy for success. You’ll experience shifting landscapes from alpine desert to the surreal Dendrosenecio forest near camp. After a long trek, enjoy a hot meal and rest beneath the looming Barranco Wall.
After breakfast, tackle the iconic Barranco Wall — a fun and challenging scramble with incredible views. From the top, follow a trail that winds through valleys and ridges in the alpine desert zone. After a scenic trek, arrive at Karanga Camp in time for lunch. Use the afternoon to rest or take a short acclimatization walk. Dinner is served early to prepare you for the following day’s climb.
Today’s hike is short but steep as you ascend to the base camp, Barafu, meaning “ice” in Swahili. You’ll pass over desolate ridgelines with views of both Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. Upon arrival, you’ll have an early dinner and try to sleep as early as possible. Prepare your gear and mind — tonight, your summit attempt begins just before midnight.
You’ll wake around 11:00 PM for tea and a light snack before beginning the summit push under starlight. The path is steep and cold as you ascend past Stella Point to reach Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – the highest point in Africa. Celebrate with photos as the sun rises over the African plains. Begin your descent back to Barafu Camp for brunch and a short rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp in the forest zone for your final night on the mountain.
After breakfast, enjoy your final trek through the lush rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you'll receive your summit certificates. A vehicle will be waiting to transfer you back to your hotel for a hot shower and celebratory lunch. Relax, reflect, and perhaps enjoy a well-earned drink to mark your incredible achievement: you’ve conquered the Roof of Africa.
