What to expect

You will experience the swordsmanship of Shinkage-ryu.

Shinkage-ryu is a traditional Japanese sword style that originated in the Muromachi period and was studied by many renowned swordsmen. It is especially famous as the sword style practiced by generations of Tokugawa shoguns.

Samurai who studied Shinkage-ryu pursued not only skill in swordsmanship but also personal growth and the ideal of Katsujinken—“the life-giving sword.” This philosophy emphasizes avoiding unnecessary harm and resolving conflicts peacefully, which is reflected in the techniques themselves.

The practice is divided into two main parts.
In the first half, you will learn Iaido, which involves solo kata using a sword. Through these kata, you will develop body control and learn how to properly handle the sword.

After learning the body mechanics through kata, the second half of training introduces Kenjutsu, paired practice with a partner. We use a safe tool called a fukuro-shinai (a bamboo sword covered with leather), allowing people of all ages and genders to train comfortably and safely at their own pace.
