    Holstentor

The Holstentor is the world-famous landmark of the Hanseatic city of Lübeck and one of the most famous buildings of the North German brick Gothic. ES borders the old town to the west and was completed in 1478. ES is one of the remains of Lübeck's city fortifications and is Lübeck's only surviving city gate apart from the Burgtor. The building is particularly impressive because of its two massive towers and the striking central structure in which the archway is located. The gate is also known for its slight slope and the sinking of the south tower, which is due to the foundations in the moorish subsoil. This movement could not be stopped until the 1930s.
