Through the south gate we enter the cellars of the palace. The cellars, like the palace, were built more than 1700 years ago and are very well preserved. Here we get a very good impression of what dimensions the palace had.
The Peristyle was the sacral meeting place in the time of Diocletian. Here he showed himself to his subjects and had himself worshipped as the son of the Roman god Jupiter. This is also the place where you can see the cathedral of St. Domnius from the outside and its famous belltower.
The temple of Jupiter is now a baptistery. We will have a look at the temple from the outside. There is no entrance fee.
The vestibule was the entrance area to Diocletian's private chambers.
Triclinium is Latin and means dining room. Here Diocletian dined with his guests.
The north gate of the palace was the most important gate in Roman times. From here the road led to the city of Salona, the capital of the Roman province. Also, here is a monumental statue of Gregory of Nin.
Main square in Split, called "Pjaca", officially called Narodni trg or People's square, it is the location of the Old City Hall.
We will stop at the Fruit's square where we will see the Venetian castle and the statue of Marko Marulić who is called "father of Croatian literature".
The end of the tour will be at Prokurative, famous square of the republic, and we will see the street of marschall Marmont.
