This is a public tour with a private guide experience. We'll join the public Waterbus to travel a great distance into the port, but your group is small (max 10 people!), so you can ask any questions you have.
Your guide has worked in the port of Antwerp himself and provides a deep-dive into the nitty-gritty of the port. These are insights and insider-stories you won't find anywhere else.
At the "Steenplein" there is a little white building in the center of the square that has "Waterbus" written on it. On the back side, there is a big double door. Your guide will be waiting for you in front of this door, or if it rains: inside the building.
This is where we start our tour, right next to an old castle that used to be the access gate towards the old town. It's the perfect location as under this little square, the origin of the port of Antwerp is well hidden. You guide hands out high-quality headsets so you can hear him or her crystal clear throughout the tour.
We enter the public Waterbus, a catamaran on steroids that will fly us over the river Scheldt. As we do, we pass by numerous activities and sights, most of them even unknown to TripAdvisor which limits us to provide you with a fully detailed itinerary: talk about going off the beaten path! The Waterbus is public transport, so we're not alone. Our group is small though, so you can ask all questions you have during the tour. When the sun is shining you can sit outside, if you're cold or it rains, you can go inside in the heated cabin with large windows. We'll travel over the river Scheldt into the port and pass by very diverse activities: docks, locks, terminals, industry, nature, villages, etc. Your guide explains what we're passing by and connect what we see to a coherent and structured story about what the port of Antwerp is about. Your guide is a port expert who has worked in the port by himself and provides insider insights: information you can"t find anywhere else.
After an hour we reach the center of the port where we disembark and enter an authentic little port village called Lillo Fort. Here, time stood still, while at the same time we have a view on the most recent port expansions: the biggest containerterminal of Europe. We visit the village and pay a visit to a very cozy café where we have a drink, which is included in the price!
As we board the Waterbus again, heading back to the city, we pass the same activities once more. This time however, you already know about the basics of this port and so your guide will build further on those insights and really get into the gritty-nitty of what makes the port of Antwerp unique. A whole new point of view opens up as we head back to the town.
