Step aboard Alba in Vervet Harbor, and set out on a true Arctic adventure. As the city fades, snowy peaks and dramatic fjords surround you, creating the perfect backdrop for whale watching. Each winter, enormous shoals of herring gather in these waters, attracting orcas and humpback whales. From outdoor decks or the comfort of the heated lounge, you may see whales diving, tail-slapping, or even breaching.
Our experienced guides are with you throughout the journey, helping you spot whales and sharing fascinating stories about their behaviour and the fragile Arctic ecosystem. What makes this tour unique is the balance of adventure and comfort: Alba is fast, stable, and built for Arctic conditions, yet offers warm indoor seating, onboard restrooms, and complimentary coffee, tea, and biscuits.
Lasting 6–7 hours, this full-day safari combines dramatic scenery, incredible wildlife, and authentic guiding. If you’re visiting Tromsø in winter, it’s the ultimate whale watching experience.
Please meet directly at the dock under the Tromsø Bridge, beside The Dock 69°39’ by Scandic Hotel. Our vessel MS Alba will be moored there, and our crew will welcome you on board. There is no reception or indoor check-in area, so boarding takes place directly at the boat.
Your day begins at Vervet Harbour, right under the Tromsø Bridge. Here, you’ll meet our friendly crew and board MS Alba, a modern, high-speed catamaran with both heated indoor lounges and outdoor viewing decks. After a short welcome and safety briefing, you can grab a warm seat inside or head out on deck to watch the harbor slip away as the snowy Arctic mountains set the backdrop for your journey.
As the boat leaves Tromsø behind, you’ll cruise through the stunning fjords that surround the city. Towering peaks, fishing villages, and wide stretches of Arctic seascape unfold as you sail deeper into the wilderness. This is the time to enjoy the scenery, take photos, and listen as our guides share stories about life in the Arctic and the unique ecosystem you’re about to experience.
The highlight of the safari takes place in the whale feeding grounds, where herring gather in massive shoals during the winter. This attracts both orcas and humpback whales, and if you’re lucky, you might see them diving, tail-slapping, or even breaching. For several hours, you’ll watch these giants of the ocean from the comfort of the heated cabin or the open viewing decks. To keep you warm, hot drinks and biscuits are served on board while our guides explain whale behavior and the importance of these Arctic waters.
After the whale encounters, MS Alba turns back toward Tromsø. The return journey is another chance to enjoy the Arctic landscapes, often bathed in the magical twilight of winter. Relax indoors or step outside for fresh air as the fjords and mountains come back into view.
By late afternoon, you’ll arrive back at Vervet Harbor, right where you started. With cameras full of photos and memories of orcas and humpbacks in the wild, your Arctic whale safari comes to an end.
