The Serranos Towers are one of the best-preserved medieval gates in Spain and a remarkable example of Gothic military architecture. Built in the 14th century, they once formed part of the ancient city wall that protected Valencia. This northern gate welcomed travelers arriving from Zaragoza and the former Kingdom of Aragon. Climbing to the top offers stunning panoramic views of Valencia’s historic center and the Turia Gardens, a beautiful green space that now occupies the old riverbed of the Turia River. Over the centuries, the towers served various purposes. In the 16th to 19th centuries, they were used as a prison for nobles, and during the Spanish Civil War, they sheltered valuable artworks from the Prado Museum in Madrid to protect them from bombings. The Serranos Towers are now a symbol of Valencia's rich heritage, offering a unique perspective on the city’s history, architecture, and landscape from above.
In this square stands the Basilica of Our Lady of the Forsaken, one of Valencia's most beloved religious sites. Dedicated to the city's patron saint, this church is a place of deep devotion and a must-see for its frescoed dome and spiritual atmosphere. It also boasts the Arch of the Water Tribunal and the famous Turia Fountain.
The Silk Exchange – A Gothic Masterpiece in Valencia The Lonja de la Seda (Silk Exchange) is one of Valencia’s most iconic landmarks and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built in the 15th century, it stands as a symbol of the city’s golden age of commerce and prosperity. This stunning example of civil Gothic architecture was used for silk trading and mercantile activities. Its majestic columns, vaulted ceilings, and the impressive Contract Hall reflect the power and elegance of Valencia’s merchant class. A visit to the Lonja is a journey into the city’s vibrant past, where art, economy, and history intertwine in a breathtaking setting.
