Guided by an accomplished artisan who honed their skills under a Living National Treasure, this intimate workshop offers an authentic artistic experience. Using a beautiful Mt. Fuji design as inspiration, participants will personalize their pieces with unique colors and designs, crafting a wearable work of art in about an hour. This engaging activity, set in a gallery near Shinagawa Station, provides a unique glimpse into Japan's rich craftsmanship and leaves you with a meaningful souvenir to cherish.
What's Included
Meeting and pickup
Your assigned guide will contact you directly three days before the tour and let you know what they will be wearing and how to recognize them. At the meeting point, the guide will be standing near the gate, holding a flag at chest height so you can easily spot them.
What to expect
First, you’ll see examples of the artisan’s work and learn how a design takes shape. The artisan will then demonstrate the workshop’s Mt. Fuji motif, showing you how to work with the brushes and add decorative details. No art experience is needed—each step will be explained before you begin.
Next, you’ll decorate your own lacquerware dish. Using Mt. Fuji as your starting point, you can add personal touches to make the design your own. The artisan will guide you through the process, and your guide will be there to help with questions.
At the end of the approximately one-hour experience, you’ll have time to admire and photograph your piece. The artisan will explain when it will be ready to use and how to care for it. Once ready, you can display your one-of-a-kind creation or use it as tableware, following the artisan’s instructions—a personal reminder of your time in Japan.
