The India Gate was built to commemorate the 70,000 Indian soldiers who lost their lives fighting for the British Army during World War I. The names of more than 13,516 British and Indian soldiers killed in the Third Anglo-Afghan War of 1919 are also inscribed on the memorial. The foundation stone was laid in 1921, and it was inaugurated in 1931. Amar Jawan Jyoti: The Amar Jawan Jyoti (Flame of the Immortal Soldier) was added beneath the arch in 1971 following the Indo-Pakistani War. It was a black marble pedestal with a reversed rifle and a soldier's helmet, with an eternal flame burning beside it. This served as a memorial to India's unknown soldiers. In 2022, the flame was merged with the flame at the newly built National War Memorial, which is located in the same C-Hexagon complex.
Originally known as the Viceroy's House, it was built to serve as the residence of the British Viceroy of India. The construction, which took 17 years, was completed in 1929. Dr. Rajendra Prasad was the first President of India to occupy it from 1950 onwards.
The original Parliament House, designed by British architects Sir Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker, was built between 1921 and 1927.
