Grandma Marija Pirogi Cooking Class

3 hours (approximately)
Offered in: English

These pirogi don’t come from a restaurant — they come from memory. In this hands-on workshop in Slavonia, you’ll make a dish rarely found on menus, but deeply rooted in local tradition.

The recipe comes from my late grandmother, made just as she did — by feel, not by measurements. From kneading the dough to folding each piece, every step follows her rhythm and care.

We use humble but meaningful ingredients: flour, eggs, potatoes, onions... seasonal, simple, and nourishing. All ingredients are sourced locally — many straight from the garden.

But tradition doesn’t mean boring. We always add a small modern twist — especially to the sweet version. One day it might be served with homemade ice cream, another with fresh fruit from our orchard or a touch of edible flowers.

You’ll get your hands messy, your belly full, and your heart warm. This experience blends the old and the new — and every time, it’s deliciously different.

This is the heritage — and you’re invited into the kitchen.

What to expect

A traditional pirogi-making workshop in a cozy Slavonian kitchen – limited to max 8 guests for an intimate and heartfelt experience.
“Pirogi aren't just food — they're memories you knead, fill, and share. Here, we don’t just make them — we inherit them.”

What to Expect:
Step into a warm, welcoming kitchen where time slows down and recipes aren’t read — they’re felt. This workshop invites you to roll up your sleeves and rediscover the flavors of the past through Slavonia’s beloved pirogi, made just like grandma used to.

Pirogi are a common dish in this part of Slavonia thanks to a wave of migration from Galicia in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
My own ancestors were among them, and that’s exactly why I now keep this tradition alive — by sharing it.

You’ll work with two traditional fillings:
• creamy mashed potatoes with onion and black pepper,
• and sweet pirogi filled with homemade fruit jam.
Both paired with Krauthaker wine.

Everything is done by hand, from the dough to the shaping — no machines, no shortcuts. Be ready to get your hands messy.
While the pirogi cook, we’ll sit together, share stories, and enjoy the first warm bites of what we’ve created together.
