The Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is an nursery, orphanage and captive breeding ground for Sri Lankan elephants. The orphanage was founded in 1975 to care and protect the many woonded, orphaned and unweaned wild elephants found wandering in and near the forests of Sri Lanka. Sigiriya Rock Fortress was built by King Kashyapa in (477 – 495 AD) as his new capital. He built his palace on the top of this rock and decorated its sides with colourful frescoes. On a small plateau about halfway up the side of this rock he built a gateway in the form of an enormous lion. Sigiriya is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Polonnaruwa is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and was one of the ancient capital's. Polonnaruwa was first established by the Chola dynasty after their successful invasion of the country's then capital Anuradhapura, in the 10th century. Safari gamedrive at 2pm. Minneriya was designated as a national park on 12 August 1997 to protect the catchment of Minneriya tank and the wildlife of the surrounding area. The tank was built by King Mahasen in third century AD. Nuwara Eliya is a city in the hill country of the Central Province and the coolest area in Sri Lanka. It is at an altitude of 1,868m (6,128ft) and is considered to be the most important location for tea production.
