Charyn Canyon is one of the most spectacular places in Kazakhstan, often called the younger brother of the Grand Canyon. You will stroll through the Valley of Castles, where centuries-old red rock formations have taken on incredible shapes, and we will show you the best photo spots. The Black Canyon impresses with the contrast between its dark basalt cliffs and the turquoise Charyn River. We will make a short stop here to admire the wild landscapes and unique plant life.
Three lakes - three true gems - are located within the “Kolsai Lakes” National Nature Park, at elevations ranging from 1,800 to 2,800 meters above sea level. Each lake has its own unique charm. The first lake is magnificent and the most popular among tourists.
Kaindy Lake stands out for its unique history and its geological youth. It formed in the early 20th century after a powerful 1911 earthquake caused a landslide that blocked the Kaindy River, creating a natural dam. As the water filled the gorge, it submerged a forest, forming the stunning lake we see today. Located at 1,800 meters above sea level, the lake is about 400 meters long, 100 meters wide, and over 20 meters deep. The water is crystal clear but very cold - around +6°C. Although a mudflow in the 1980s made the lake shallower, its surreal beauty continues to attract visitors all year round.
