Journey into the heart of the Cape Winelands to board the Franschhoek Wine Tram for a unique one-way journey through the vineyards, with a stop to enjoy a wine tasting at one of the region's renowned wine estates, before heading to Aquila Game Reserve (one of the closest safari destinations to Cape Town - just about 2.5 hours away) for a sunset 4x4 safari in search of some of the Big Five and other native wildlife in the wild.

1Franschhoek Wine Tram - Official Site (Franschhoek Terminal)
Start with a morning pick-up from Cape Town. After a scenic 90 minute drive, arrive at the quaint town of Franschhoek to uncover the beauty of this region onboard a vintage style railway tram while sipping on a glass of world-renowned wine from the surrounding vineyards. Departing from the central village ticket office, hop on the Franschhoek Wine Tram for a short (10min) one-way journey through the rolling vineyards of the valley to reach Rickety Bridge winery for a standard wine tasting and sample a selected choice of their wines. From the station platform, you'll be transported past rows of vines and the historic Cape Dutch Manor to the tasting centre, offering a glimpse into the inner workings of a working winery. Summer weather calls for alfresco wine tasting with mountain vistas, while on cooler days tastings is around the cosy wood-burning fireplace. As lunch time nears, the journey continues an hour's drive inland to a winery en route.

2Aquila Private Game Reserve
After lunch reach your safari destination at Aquila Game Reserve just before golden hour for a magical ± 3-hour sunset game drive led by a game ranger. Sit back and enjoy the spectacle of diverse wildlife and natural Karoo beauty with the opportunity to capture the wildlife reintroduced to this natural habitat. The 10 000 hectare conservancy is home to most of the majestic Big 5 legends: elephant, lion, buffalo, rhino*. Listen to insider stories and facts about the surroundings and the animals you encounter along the way as the sky gets painted in yellow, orange, and red hues. Aquila Game Reserve delivers a taste-of-a-safari feeling for Western Cape locals and visitors. This easily accessible 4x4 safari is perfect if you don't have the time for a multi-day safari to Kruger National Park or other wildlife destinations further afield. After the safari, head back to arrive in Cape Town long after sunset (±9pm). *Leopards are highly elusive and rarely seen in the Western Cape.
