Ishkashim is a small mountain town in the Pamir region of Tajikistan, located near the Panj River on the border with Afghanistan. Today is a long and important travel day, as the route crosses from Tajikistan into Kyrgyzstan through the high-altitude Kyzyl-Art Pass. Depart from Karakul and drive across wide, open Pamir landscapes toward the Tajik–Kyrgyz border. The scenery is remote and dramatic, with red mountains, empty valleys, and high-altitude desert views. Kyzyl-Art Pass is one of the highest and most famous border crossings on the Pamir Highway, commonly described at around 4,280 meters above sea level.
