The Dambulla caves form an important part of Sri Lanka’s cultural heritage.
Begin the day with one of Sri Lanka’s signature experiences: Sigiriya Rock Fortress. Climb through the ancient gardens towards the dramatic rock citadel and discover the remains of the fifth-century royal complex, including the landscaped gardens, water features, frescoes and archaeological remains. From the higher levels, enjoy panoramic views across the surrounding countryside. Sigiriya is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is recognised by Sri Lanka Tourism for its ancient palace ruins, gardens and frescoes.
Traditional Rural Sri Lanka Leave the ancient kingdom behind and experience the quieter countryside around Hiriwadunna. Travel through a traditional village environment surrounded by paddy fields, forests, lakes and tropical vegetation. This experience provides a contrast to the major archaeological attractions and gives travellers a glimpse of rural Sri Lankan life.
Scenic Journey Continue through the Cultural Triangle before heading south towards Kandy. Along the way, enjoy the changing scenery as dry-zone landscapes gradually give way to greener vegetation and rolling hills. The journey itself becomes part of the experience as you enter Sri Lanka’s central highlands.
In the evening, experience the vibrant Kandyan Cultural Dance Show and discover one of Sri Lanka’s most distinctive performing arts traditions. Enjoy colourful traditional costumes, energetic Kandyan dancing, rhythmic drumming and a variety of traditional performance styles inspired by Sri Lankan folklore and cultural heritage. One of Sri Lanka’s Great Scenic Experiences Prepare to experience one of Sri Lanka’s most memorable railway journeys. Board the train at Nanu Oya and travel through the spectacular hill country towards Ella. Watch the scenery unfold through windows and open carriage doors as the train winds through tea plantations, misty mountains, deep valleys, forests, bridges and small hill-country settlements.
After arriving in Ella, continue to the famous Nine Arch Bridge. Walk through the lush surroundings to view this impressive colonial-era railway bridge, built entirely from brick, stone and cement without steel reinforcement. Surrounded by dense vegetation and tea-country scenery, it has become one of Ella’s most recognisable landmarks.
Scenic Waterfall Stop Stop at Ravana Falls, one of the best-known waterfalls along the route from Ella towards the south. Surrounded by dramatic rock formations and tropical vegetation, the waterfall provides an excellent opportunity to enjoy Sri Lanka’s natural scenery and capture photographs before continuing towards Yala.
