Three Historical Jewels
In a single day, you will visit three unique historical highlights:
Harburg Castle: A remarkably well-preserved medieval fortress that has remained virtually unchanged for centuries, offering stunning views of the Wörnitz Valley.
Dinkelsbühl: A magnificent medieval city famous for its colorful half-timbered houses and complete historic wall, making it one of the most picturesque towns on the Romantic Road.
Rothenburg ob der Tauber: The quintessential fairy-tale city, known worldwide for its charming, fully preserved medieval center and iconic cobblestone streets.
You can be picked up from any pre-agreed location in Munich. I’ll be driving a black Škoda Superb Combi. I’ll message you to let you know what I’m wearing, and I’ll also let you know when I’m on my way and again about 10 minutes before we meet.
If no specific pickup location is arranged, we can meet at Marienplatz, the main square in Munich. Please wait in front of the Neues Rathaus (New Town Hall), near the Marienplatz subway exit, where you can easily see the famous Glockenspiel clock tower. It’s a central and easy-to-find meeting point.
Perched high above the Wörnitz River, Harburg Castle is one of the oldest and best-preserved medieval castles in Germany. Dating back to the 11th century, it offers visitors a fascinating journey into the past with its original fortifications, towers, inner courtyards, and stunning panoramic views of the surrounding Bavarian countryside. During your visit, you’ll discover centuries of history reflected in the castle’s architecture and atmosphere — from its mighty defensive walls to its picturesque half-timbered buildings. Harburg Castle is a true hidden gem on Germany’s famous Romantic Road, making it a perfect stop for history lovers, photographers, and anyone seeking authentic medieval charm. Optional guided tours are available to learn more about the castle’s legends, noble families, and everyday life in the Middle Ages.
Dinkelsbühl, first mentioned in 928, is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Germany and a true jewel of the Romantic Road. Enclosed by 12th-century walls and towers, the town feels like a living museum. Its colorful half-timbered houses, narrow cobblestone lanes, and charming market square invite visitors to step back into the Middle Ages. Once a prosperous Free Imperial City (from 1305), Dinkelsbühl has retained its historical atmosphere for centuries. Highlights include the magnificent late-Gothic St. George’s Minster (built between 1448–1499), traditional Bavarian restaurants, and scenic walks along the ramparts. A perfect stop for travelers seeking authentic medieval charm and Bavarian hospitality.
Rothenburg ob der Tauber, founded in 1274, is one of Europe’s best-preserved medieval towns and a highlight of the Romantic Road. Perched above the Tauber River, it charms visitors with colorful half-timbered houses, cobblestone lanes, and original city walls that can still be walked around entirely. Don’t miss the iconic #Plönlein corner — one of the most photographed places in Germany — and St. James’s Church with its stunning wooden altar from 1505–1508. The town also features the year-round Christmas shop “Käthe Wohlfahrt” and the Medieval Crime Museum, showcasing life, justice, and punishment in the Middle Ages. Rothenburg is a living postcard of medieval Germany, full of history, beauty, and timeless atmosphere.
