Your professional driver will pick you up from your hotel and take you on a two-hour journey to Gubei Water Town. Departing from the city center, you will pass through residential areas of Beijing, witness bustling streets, and head north into the mountainous region, experiencing the changing seasons of the capital. Upon arrival, the driver will assist you in purchasing tickets on-site or booking in advance (Option C) for both Gubei Water Town and Simatai Great Wall. You will then be free to explore the unique landscape where the "Little Jiangnan of Beijing" and Simatai Great Wall complement each other. If you choose to depart at noon and stay until the evening, you can also enjoy the daily drone light show, a spectacular fusion of modern technology and traditional scenery.
Your driver will greet you at your hotel lobby, holding a sign with your name. The journey to Gubei takes 2–2.5 hours depending on distance and traffic conditions. For travelers who book Option A, the driver will use translator to communicate and no in-person guiding service is provided if you book Option A.
We will drop off travelers at the front gate of the Gubei Water Town and help to buy tickets.
Gubei Water Town: A Riverside Retreat Under the Great Wall Nestled in the mountainous Miyun District of Beijing, approximately a two-hour drive from the city center, Gubei Water Town offers a picturesque escape. Its most stunning feature is its dramatic backdrop: the majestic Simatai Great Wall, which snakes along the ridges high above the town. This unique positioning creates a breathtaking blend of watery southern Chinese charm and rugged northern grandeur. The town itself is a beautifully constructed replica of a classic Jiangnan-style water town. Visitors can wander along ancient-style cobblestone lanes, cross graceful arched stone bridges, and glide on boats along serene canals. Beyond its scenic beauty, the town is alive with cultural experiences. Numerous workshops allow you to try traditional crafts like block printing, making rice wine, or creating sweet Bingtanghulu (candied fruit).
Unlike the heavily restored sections of the Great Wall closer to Beijing, Simatai offers a uniquely authentic and rugged experience. Its primary distinction lies in its remarkable preservation, allowing visitors to walk on original, centuries-old brickwork and witness the Wall's true, untamed character. For many, the pinnacle of a Simatai visit is the Night Tour. As dusk falls, the wall is illuminated by soft golden lights, transforming it into a majestic, glowing dragon winding through the dark peaks. Walking this illuminated section is a serene and almost magical experience, offering a perspective completely different from the daytime. Access to the night tour is conveniently managed via a cable car ride from the base at Gubei Water Town.
