In this area where countless masterpieces were born, you’ll experience the authentic cel painting techniques once used in real animation studios and create your very own anime cel!

Craft your very own anime cel in this engaging workshop located in Tokyo’s Suginami area, a hub for anime studios. Guided by a seasoned animator, you’ll dive into the traditional techniques of cel animation, learning to paint with authentic materials just like the professionals. After mastering some basic strokes, you’ll create a unique cel that captures your favorite character. All materials are provided, and you’ll leave with a treasured piece of anime art from your Tokyo adventure.

What to expect

Japanese animation is beloved worldwide. Cel animation, the art that underpinned its golden age, is a precious production technique that is now in danger of disappearing. In this workshop, instructors with experience drawing cels in the animation industry will provide easy-to-understand instruction, even for beginners. Participants will first learn about the process of animation production and the characteristics of cel animation, then color line drawings using specialized paints and brushes. You can take home the completed cel animation as it is.

Classes are limited to 1-5 people, and anyone aged 7 and over is welcome to participate. Tools and aprons are provided, and you can take home the completed cel animation as a souvenir. Unlike other art experiences, the greatest draw is the opportunity to recreate techniques used in actual anime production. Instruction is available in Japanese and English, and the workshop is held only on weekends. Recommended for anime fans as well as tourists looking for a cultural experience.
