The Caribbean Expedition combines three very different nature experiences near Puerto Limón in one relaxed, cruise-friendly tour. Guests enjoy a scenic boat ride on the Tortuguero Canal, an easy walk through Cahuita National Park, and a visit to Maratopia, our tropical jungle garden in Matama.

At Maratopia, guests can see large blue Morpho butterflies, walk among tropical plants, and enjoy a seasonal fruit tasting with fruits grown directly in our garden. Along the way, there is a good chance to spot wild sloths, howler monkeys, tropical birds, reptiles, and other animals, although all wildlife lives freely in nature and sightings are never guaranteed.

Pickup is directly at the Puerto Limón cruise port exit, street side, just after the port gate/turnstile. Your guide will be waiting there with a Maratopia sign.

This tour is designed for cruise passengers, so the tour starts as soon as your ship has docked and guests are allowed to leave the ship. Please come directly to the meeting point once disembarkation has been cleared, so the group can start the tour without delay and make the most of the time in Puerto Limón.

    Walk through Cahuita National Park’s coastal rainforest, where jungle trails, Caribbean beach scenery, and possible wildlife sightings such as sloths, monkeys, raccoons, iguanas, butterflies, and tropical birds create a relaxed nature experience. The park also has a beautiful beach, and if weather and sea conditions allow, guests may have time for a refreshing swim.

    Tortuguero Canal

    Enjoy a scenic boat ride on the Tortuguero Canal, one of the best ways to experience the lush Caribbean nature near Puerto Limón. From the water, guests can relax and look for wildlife along the riverbanks, including monkeys, sloths, iguanas, caimans, tropical birds, and other animals. Wildlife sightings are common, but never guaranteed, as all animals live freely in nature.

    Visit Maratopia, our tropical jungle garden in Matama, Puerto Limón. Wild sloths are often seen at Maratopia, and with some luck, howler monkeys and tropical birds may also appear. As these animals live freely in nature, sightings are possible and frequent, but never guaranteed.
