Authentic Japanese Confectionery Wagashi Making

1 hour 30 minutes (approximately)
Offered in: English

In this class, your local host will guide you into the world of Japanese confectionery (Wagashi). We will focus on two of the most popular items—Ichigo Daifuku and Dango—which beautifully reflect Japan's delicate sense of the seasons. You will make both types completely by hand, from preparing the raw ingredients to the final product. Experience the chewy mochi mochi texture and the elegant sweetness of the anko (sweet bean paste), which is incomparable to store-bought items. This is a chance to learn about Japanese culture in the most delicious and enjoyable way.

What to expect

In this experience, you will make popular Japanese sweets and authentic Matcha green tea entirely by your own hands.

Completely Handmade: We use absolutely no pre-made ingredients. You will be meticulously guided to create all three items—Ichigo Daifuku, Dango, and Matcha—from scratch with your own hands.

Ichigo Daifuku (Strawberry Mochi): Experience the process of wrapping fresh, seasonal strawberries and smooth sweet bean paste (anko) in soft gyūhi (a type of mochi). This is one of the most popular Japanese sweets.

Mitarashi Dango and Anko Dango: Start from kneading the rice flour dough for the dumplings, rolling them, and then steaming (or boiling) them. You will then coat them with savory-sweet Mitarashi glaze or serve them with elegant Anko (sweet red bean paste).

Authentic Matcha Experience: You will personally whisk and prepare Matcha (green tea), an inseparable partner to Wagashi. Enjoy the perfect combination of your handmade sweets and a traditional cup of tea.

For participants under the age of 3 or aged 65 and older, we may offer an alternative Japanese confectionery making experience due to the risk of choking on certain foods.
