Wakehurst Place in the heart of the ancient county of Sussex, features a vast botanical garden and is home to the Millennium Seed Bank with over 500 acres of diverse landscapes and plants from across the globe. The estate is managed by the world famous Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew. The original home was built in 1205 by William de Wakehurst with the current mansion built by Edward Culpeper between 1571 and 1590. We can tour the beautifully preserved mansion with its art and contents and learn about the families that have lived here over the centuries. We can walk in the extensive grounds and view the vast array of plants. Wakehurt is beautiful whatever time of the year. There is a cafe for a coffee and snack and a fantastic shop
We can stop for lunch in a traditional English pub - 'pub grub and a pint'. I like The Gardeners Arms but it is very close to the Ardingly Antiques Fair and can get very busy. There are may other wonderful old pubs nearby and we can decide a location nearer the time.
