Private Tsukiji Market Tour and Sushi Making at a Local Home

4 hours (approximately)
Offered in: English

This experience combines a guided visit to the Tsukiji Outer Market with a private, hands-on sushi-making session at a Japanese home — a setting rarely open to visitors.
Led by a National Licensed Guide Interpreter with 15 years of experience, it focuses on understanding Japanese food culture through everyday cooking rather than professional techniques.

Participants learn simple, practical methods of sushi-making that can easily be recreated after returning home.
The goal is not to imitate a sushi chef, but to master the essential skills — such as preparing sushi rice, slicing tuna, and grating wasabi — in a relaxed, home-style setting.

Unlike classes held in restaurants or studios, this program offers insight into ordinary Japanese life, showing how sushi can be prepared and enjoyed in a real home environment.

What to expect

This is a completely private tour, and a vegetarian option is available.

Your nationally licensed tour guide — who is also an experienced sushi instructor — will lead you through the lively Tsukiji Outer Market. Along the way, we’ll purchase fresh ingredients such as tuna, sashimi, and wasabi.

After about an hour, we’ll take the subway to my home, where you’ll prepare sushi rice, slice tuna, grate wasabi, and cut seaweed. Then, we’ll make three types of sushi: maki (rolled), nigiri (hand-shaped), and gunkan (boat-shaped).

Finally, enjoy your handmade sushi with miso soup prepared by me.

The class takes place at my home with a beautiful view, directly connected to Higashi-Ikebukuro Station.

After the sushi experience, enjoy shopping at nearby Pokémon and Hello Kitty stores, popular with visitors. Ikebukuro Station is a 10-minute walk away, offering easy access to major Tokyo attractions.

Your instructor can answer any questions about Japanese culture, customs, or sightseeing.

If you are late, please email your estimated arrival time. I will wait until 9:30 a.m.; late arrivals may miss part of the Tsukiji visit.
