Come with me to the last remaining haven in Prenzlauer Berg, where rents are still affordable and the people are still true Berliners. At the last large housing estate built in the GDR, we’ll learn more about the history of the GDR and why Prenzlauer Berg was so important to the regime. We’ll also find out what used to stand on the site and why this was so significant for Berlin’s development.
We are meeting at the corner Danziger/Greifswalder Straße, diagonal of Willy Bresch Pub
We’ll walk through the last large-scale housing estate built by the GDR in the heart of Prenzlauer Berg, a secluded island where people can still afford to live. Discover hidden corners and find out why this area used to be so important for the development of Berlin during the 19th century as well as during GDR times.
Explore the site of what was once the city’s largest hospital and homeless shelter, built in the 19th century, and see what has become of it today.
We walk past another GDR monument, which has been a listed building since 2025 and is an incredibly interesting place that is well worth a visit.
