What to expect

Embark on a guided hike along the Larano Trail, one of Madeira Island’s most impressive coastal routes. Begin your journey on the slopes above Machico and head north, gradually revealing one of the island’s most dramatic and beautiful landscapes.

Start by following a levada that winds along the Machico valley, leading you to the access point of Boca do Risco. Here, the scenery changes dramatically — to the right, the Atlantic Ocean stretches out to the horizon; to the left, rocky mountains rise, their tops covered by Laurisilva forest perfectly shaped by the wind.

Enjoy a moderate hike, with no major ascents, although some narrow and exposed sections require attention and steady footing. Along the way, the sound of the waves mixes with birdsong and the calm of the cliffs — an invitation to contemplation and to moving at nature’s slow rhythm.

The hike ends in Porto da Cruz, one of the highlights of the journey. After several hours walking between sea and mountains, the trail descends into one of Madeira’s most picturesque villages, surrounded by vineyards and dominated by the impressive Penha d’Águia rock formation.
