Located in Uji, Byodo-in is a masterpiece of Japanese Buddhist architecture and a symbol of the "Pure Land" (paradise). The Phoenix Hall: This stunning central hall is the temple's most famous feature. Its graceful silhouette is said to resemble a phoenix spreading its wings, and it is so iconic that it is featured on the back of the Japanese 10-yen coin. A Mirror of Paradise: The hall is built on an island in the middle of a large pond.
