Meeting and pickup
Meet at the Vista Chinesa viewpoint on Estrada da Vista Chinesa. Your guide, Sean, will be waiting at the viewpoint and will be wearing a lanyard displaying his official Cadastur guide badge with photo identification
What to expect
Learn about the history of Vista Chinesa and Tijuca Forest, one of the world's first major reforestation projects.
From the viewpoint, enter the Atlantic Rainforest and begin a mostly downhill hike beneath the forest canopy. Follow trails past tropical plants, streams and large trees while learning about the local ecosystem and looking out for monkeys, birds and butterflies.
The route includes uneven terrain, rocks, tree roots and one short scrambling section where you need to use your hands. Your guide will help you through it.
Continue to the Horto waterfall system, visiting waterfalls including Cachoeira do Chuveiro, Cachoeira do Horto and Cachoeira da Gruta. Stop to take photos, relax, swim in natural pools and cool down beneath the waterfalls.
Finish the approximately 3.5 hour hike in Horto, close to Rio's Botanical Garden, where you can easily continue by Uber or taxi.
