Walk through Singapore's rainforest and discover the Bukit Brown Chinese cemetery, a unique heritage site set in lush greenery.
We will walk through the McRitchie and Rifle Range nature reserves along well-maintained trails, where you can expect to see local wildlife - monkeys and birds mostly - majestic trees, exotic fruits, clear streams, grassy swamps, and a peaceful reservoir.
The Bukit Brown cemetery is a scenic and peaceful network of small backroads with a few trails that lead deeper in the jungle and to an isolated Taoist temple.
We’ll walk 3 to 4h in tropical weather (around 10km) so come recharged, hydrated, and ready to break a sweat. Tropical downpours may force us to pause and take shelter, potentially adding 30min to the walk.
Our end point is Beauty World, a traditional mall with plenty of local food and drink options.
Wear closed walking shoes and bring plenty of water (1.5L per person).
Also good to pack: raincoat, sunblock, insect repellent.
The jungle awaits.
Exit A of the Botanic Gardens MRT station (yellow Circle line CC19 / blue Downtown line DT9). Meet at the top of the escalators, outside. Careful - this is NOT the Botanic Gardens entrance on Napier Rd. This is on the Bukit Timah Rd side of the gardens.
The tour ends at the Beauty World Centre (with plenty of local food and drinks) and I'll take you down to the MRT station if you're headed back by train (blue Downtown line, DT5).
From the meetup point it's a 20min warm-up walk through a leafy neighbourhood to Bukit Brown. Bukit Brown is a municipal Chinese cemetery that operated from 1922 to 1973. It offers a captivating glimpse into what the burial traditions of the different Chinese communities were then. We'll walk along the cemetery's quiet roads that wind through lush greenery. This is a peaceful, sunny place with elaborate Chinese tombs that include that of prominent figures after which some of Singapore's streets are still named. Our exact route will depend on terrain conditions, as rain can flood certain paths. But we will walk past majestic trees covered in curtains of vegetation (dubbed the "Avatar trees"), go and find a solitary Taoist temple in the jungle, and eventually leave the cemetery’s quiet greenery to head into the McRitchie rainforest.
We'll dive into the rainforest via a well-maintained trail towards the McRitchie reservoir, a large body of clear water lined by thick vegetation, where herons can often be seen in the shallow edges or in the tall grass. The path follows the reservoir shore, skirting a scenic golf course for a while, before heading back into the forest. We'll climb the Jelutong observation tower for an expansive view of the surrounding canopy and continue into the jungle, walking along and across a stream towards the Rifle Range section.
The McRitchie trail leads to a quiet service road in the forest that connects us to the Rifle Range nature reserve. We’ll likely encounter frolicking monkeys along the way. The Rifle Range trail is in great condition and takes us back into the majestic jungle. Expect to walk past mighty banyan trees, spot seasonal fruits, and observe more wildlife. We will end at Beauty World, an 'old school' shopping centre that has tons of local charm, with its traditional Chinese medicine practitioners, hardware stores, and of course its food court where you'll be able to treat yourself to well-deserved cold drinks and local delights.
