This is a Kanazawa-only craft bonsai experience using rare black-glazed tile pots handcrafted by Hokuriku’s only onigawara artisan.
More than a simple workshop, this experience invites travelers to help preserve Kanazawa’s traditional tile culture through hands-on creation and take home a meaningful bonsai they made themselves.
All bonsai are made using artificial plants, making them easy to take home to your own country.

Meet at Record Cafe & Bar SHIKA. Located in Kanazawa City. About 5-10 minutes by taxi from Kanazawa Station. Please arrive 5 minutes early.

What to expect

Travelers will meet at SHIKA. in Kanazawa and be welcomed into a relaxed workshop setting.
The experience begins with a brief introduction to Kanazawa’s black tile culture and the story of the onigawara tradition.
Guests will then create their own craft bonsai using a rare black-glazed tile pot, with step-by-step guidance throughout the process.
No prior experience is needed, and all materials are provided.
At the end of the workshop, travelers can take home their finished bonsai as a unique souvenir of Kanazawa.
The experience concludes with matcha and Japanese sweets, giving guests time to relax, take photos, and enjoy their finished craft bonsai.
