Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you are warmly welcomed by our mountain team and transferred to your lodge in Arusha/Moshi. After settling in, your lead guide meets you for a full equipment check and safety briefing. You will discuss the route, weather expectations, and the summit strategy.
After breakfast, drive to the western side of Kilimanjaro where the Lemosho Gate welcomes you with misty forest air and colobus monkey calls. After park registration, begin trekking under a lush rainforest canopy. This is a gentle but steady ascent through thick vegetation and rich birdlife.
Leave the forest behind as the trail climbs steeply into the heather and moorland zone. The landscape opens dramatically, offering the first wide views over the Shira Plateau. The air becomes cooler and the vegetation more sparse.
Today is a shorter and easier trek across the Shira Plateau, one of Kilimanjaro’s most iconic geological features. The path is gentle, allowing your body time to acclimatize. Optional afternoon acclimatization hikes are offered for additional elevation gain.
A key acclimatization day. Begin with a steady ascent toward Lava Tower, a striking volcanic formation at 4,600 m. After lunch near the tower, descend to Barranco Camp, located in a scenic valley below the Breach Wall. This “climb high, sleep low” routine greatly improves your summit success.
Start with the exciting scramble up Barranco Wall, a non-technical but rewarding climb with stunning panoramas. Continue through ridges and valleys with magical views of Kibo’s southern glaciers. Arrive at Karanga Camp early for rest and hydration.
The trail ascends through alpine desert terrain toward Barafu, your basecamp for the summit attempt. The air is noticeably thinner and colder. After an early dinner, rest as much as possible. You will begin your summit push around midnight.
Your summit attempt begins in the quiet hours of the night. Step by step, with headlamps lighting the path, you ascend to Stella Point (5,756 m) just before sunrise. Continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating and taking photos, descend to Barafu for a short rest before continuing to Mweka Camp for your final night on the mountain.
Descend through the rainforest where warm, moist air and thick vegetation return. At Mweka Gate, you receive your official summit certificates before being driven back to your hotel for a hot shower and well-deserved rest.
