Prison Island is perhaps the most famous of Zanzibar's offshore islands. Originally built as a prison that was never used as such (it later served as a quarantine station), today Changuu is home to a remarkable colony of Aldabra giant tortoises — some over 100 years old. Walking among these magnificent ancient creatures, many of whom have outlived several human generations, is a genuinely moving experience. The island also offers good snorkeling on its surrounding reef and beautiful sandy beaches.
Chapwani is the quiet gem of the Stone Town archipelago — a tiny private island with pristine white beaches, gentle water, and an unhurried pace that feels worlds away from Stone Town's vibrant bustle. Chapwani's surrounding waters offer excellent snorkeling on largely undisturbed coral reefs. The island's bird life is remarkable, and its atmosphere is one of absolute tranquility.
Chumbe Island Coral Park is one of Africa's most important marine conservation success stories — a privately managed marine protected area that has recovered dramatically since receiving protection in 1994. The snorkeling here is simply world-class: over 200 species of hard coral and 400 species of reef fish in extraordinary density and health. Chumbe also features a 19th-century lighthouse and exceptional coastal forest. This is the premium highlight of your island day.
Your dhow journey passes the scenic Bawe Island and tiny Snake Island (Mazinji), offering photo opportunities and context for Stone Town's remarkable island geography. Depending on conditions, brief stops may be arranged.
