In the morning, staff will take you to the high-speed rail station. After arriving in Datong by bullet train, you will have a private vehicle and tour guide to begin your tour. You will visit the Hanging Temple in Datong, Shanxi—a 'swan song of the cliffs' first built over 1,500 years ago during the Northern Wei Dynasty. Suspended on a 60-meter-high cliff face, its ingenious structure and extraordinary design make it an architectural marvel that uniquely integrates Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism. Here, you can reflect on 'the whispers of the wind and the heart of the Hanging Temple,' and appreciate the word 'spectacular' exclaimed by the great poet Li Bai. You will also have the chance to ascend the temple and experience its charm firsthand.
Excavated from 460 AD during the Northern Wei Dynasty, this UNESCO World Heritage site features 45 major caves and over 59,000 statues. As China's first royal-commissioned grottoes, Yungang marks the beginning of Buddhist art's sinicization. The five "Tan Yao Caves" (Caves 16–20) blend Central Asian and Chinese styles; the middle period caves showcase intricate carvings with flying apsaras and celestial musicians; later caves reveal a more slender, ethereal aesthetic. Step into Yungang—step into a civilization's epic written with hammer and chisel.
The Datong Ancient City Wall was built in the Ming Dynasty, over 600 years ago. Stretching more than 7 kilometers around, it's tall and wide—a key frontier stronghold in northern China back in the day. Stand on top, and you can see the entire old city of Datong. The view is wide open. After visiting all the attractions for the day, the tour guide will take you to Datong High-Speed Railway Station to board the bullet train to Beijing. Upon arrival in Beijing, staff will take you back to your hotel.
