This is a private walking tour led by a former Japanese history teacher.
Instead of simply visiting famous spots, you will understand the stories behind Kiyomizu-dera, the samurai era, and the cultural traditions that shaped Kyoto.
You will not just take photos — you will learn why these places matter.
Through clear explanations and historical context, I help you connect temples, shrines, and streets into one meaningful story.
This tour is ideal for travelers who want depth, authenticity, and a relaxed pace with personal interaction.
Meeting Point: In front of the Niomon Gate (main red gate) of Kiyomizu-dera Temple. Please look for your guide standing near the gate entrance. I will be holding an iPad.
The tour ends at Yasaka Shrine (Gion area). After the tour, you are free to explore the area, enjoy local restaurants, or continue sightseeing on your own.
Explore the UNESCO World Heritage site of Kiyomizu-dera Temple. Learn about its 1,200-year history, architectural structure, and the cultural meaning behind its famous wooden stage and main hall. Admission to Kiyomizu-dera Temple (500 JPY per person) is included in the tour price.
Walk through the historic streets of Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka, two of Kyoto’s most iconic preserved districts. Discover traditional wooden townhouses, hidden details in the architecture, and stories that reveal how people lived in old Kyoto. This charming area offers a glimpse into Japan’s cultural heritage and everyday life of the past.
Walk along Nene-no-Michi and hear the story of Nene and Toyotomi Hideyoshi, key figures of Japan’s feudal era.
Visit the area around Kōdai-ji Temple, founded by Nene in memory of her husband, Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Learn about their lives during Japan’s feudal era and how their legacy shaped Kyoto’s cultural history. While we do not enter the temple grounds, you will experience the atmosphere of this historic site and understand its significance.
Conclude the tour at Yasaka Shrine and understand the role of Shinto in Japanese culture.
