The Name: It is named after the Pink family, Irish settlers who established a farm there in 1826. Unique Science: It is a meromictic lake, meaning its water layers never mix. This lack of oxygen at the bottom has preserved prehistoric life, including a rare pink anaerobic bacterium and the three-spined stickleback, a saltwater fish that adapted to the lake's gradual desalination over 3,000 years. Conservation: To protect its fragile ecosystem, swimming and pets are strictly prohibited.
