A train ride in the morning followed by a ride to the historical heartland of Transylvania - The Saxon Villages. Throughout the day the scenery becomes captivating and the pastel-coloured architecture and rural existence of Saxon life with all its history, can be experienced first hand.
We end the day with a stay in a charming village that feels like a step back in time. Viscri is one of the historic Saxon villages of Transylvania, renowned for its timeless atmosphere and whitewashed houses. At the heart of its enchantment stands the fortified church, part of the UNESCO World Heritage list, preserving centuries of history and tradition.
A 40km ride exploring the wonderful Saxon Villages in the Bunesti region, a unique collection of rural communities established by German settlers in the 12th-13th centuries. The five villages - Bunești, Criț, Meșendorf, Roadeș, and Viscri are renowned for their preserved medieval architecture and fortified churches.
Riding through the rolling Transylvanian countryside, we stop and explore the traditional villages with colourful Saxon houses and centuries-old fortified churches surrounded by defensive walls and towers that once protected local communities.
After a night living like a true Saxon indulging in all their traditions, we head south taking on part of the region’s best off-road cycling routes; through fields of farm animals on steep grassy banks and primeval Beech Forests. This is another excellent day’s ride taking in the sights and charm of Transylvanian. The day’s cycling ends back in Brasov before we take a longer, train journey to eastern Romania, arriving in Galati for a well-deserved rest.
The Viscri Fortified Church in the village of Viscri, Romania, was built in the 12th Century and is one of the best-preserved Saxon fortified churches in Transylvania. It is part of the UNESCO site Villages with Fortified Churches in Transylvania and include defensive walls, towers, and battlements used to protect the village from raids. (4 euro entry)
There’s a later start on this day giving a bit more time to freshen up the legs. As we head out on our 5-day odyssey of the incredible Danube Delta, we cross the river by ferry where you'll start to notice the vastly different scenery. We ride adjacent to the Danube river for the first part of the day before heading into the Muntii Mountains on designated cycle paths with many vantage points of the Delta below
.A steady and relaxing day on the bike, this time we travel along back roads to our last major town Tulcea. The final 15km is a breeze - we jump off the bikes and take a boat down the river to our accommodation. There is no better way to see this amazing section of the Danube than floating down it!
A quiet remote fishing village with no car access located in the Danube Delta along the coast of the Black Sea. The village has a number of restaurants renowned for their fish cuisine easily accessible by foot.
After a short boat ride, we begin riding from Murighiol and then head west hugging the western edge of the huge Lacul Razim Lake. The tranquil lifestyle that exists in the Delta is apparent as we pass through many traditional fishing villages along the way. The day finishes with a boat trip through the delta swamplands to Gura Portitei where we spend the evening, arriving in time to watch the magnificent sunset.
We will visit the ancient ruins of Argamum, a significant archaeological site founded by Greek colonists in the 7th century BC, later becoming a Roman settlement. It is recognized as the first city-named settlement on Romanian territory to be mentioned in ancient sources, featuring ruins of basilicas, walls, and defensive structures overlooking Lake Razim
An interesting and challenging day in the saddle as we head into the most remote area of the region on mainly flat off-road terrain. We leave the resort of Gura Portitei and wind through some dirt tracks around Lake Sineo. At the back end of our ride we cross elevated farmlands which have some very nice views back to Gura Portitei and down to the lake, giving you some great perspective and where we have just ridden. We will be greeted with a big smile by our hosts in Vadu and swimming pool to boot!
A much shorter day as we head towards suburbia, passing through the beachside resort of Mamaia, before reaching Constanta, where the cycling for this unforgettable journey ends.
