But I’m not here to just talk about kings and queens in velvet robes. Bratislava has a grittier and more heroic side as well. We’ll stand on the square where the Velvet Revolution changed everything and brought freedom, but we’ll also look into the darker corners of the past at the old execution site.   When we pass under Michael’s Gate, we are actually walking through the only preserved portal of the medieval fortifications. It’s the spot where, in the Middle Ages, the city ended and the dangerous world outside began. I’ll show you the "Zero Kilometer" plaque, from which distances to the rest of the world are measured, and tell you why local students have been trying not to speak while walking under this gate for centuries.

  At SNP Square, we’ll see a side of Bratislava inspired by the world. Here stands Slovakia’s first skyscraper, with lines echoing the elegance of 1930s Chicago architecture. However, it is also a place of deep memory where the history of freedom was written. It was on this very square that thousands gathered during the Velvet Revolution, jingling their keys to signal the definitive end of the Communist regime. Here, the spirit of modern entrepreneurship meets the legacy of significant social changes that reshaped our country forever.

  Cumil

  No visit to Bratislava would be complete without saying hello to our biggest celebrity. Čumil, the bronze man peeking out of a manhole, is arguably the most photographed figure in the city. Although he has no roots in medieval history, he has become a symbol of Bratislava’s sense of humor and laid-back vibe. He is the only "worker" who hasn't done a single thing for decades except smile at passers-by—and honestly, sometimes we all envy him for that job. We’ll talk about why he had to get his own unique road sign and how many times he almost lost his head to distracted drivers. Plenty of legends surround Čumil: some say he’s just taking a break after cleaning the sewers, while others claim he’s cheekily looking up ladies' skirts. One thing is certain—tradition says that if you touch his cap, it will bring you good luck.

  Most SNP

  When you look toward the Danube, you’ll see one of the boldest architectural projects of the 20th century. Most SNP (the Bridge of the Slovak National Uprising), with its iconic "UFO" observation deck, is a structure that divided Bratislava forever—both literally and metaphorically. We’ll talk about the heavy price the city paid for this futuristic dream, as a large part of the historical Jewish quarter and the castle district had to be demolished to make way for it. It is a fascinating example of Brutalist architecture, named the "Building of the Century" in Slovakia in 2001.

  As we enter the Main Square, your eyes will immediately be drawn to the Old Town Hall—the oldest city hall in the country and a place that has witnessed absolutely everything. It’s not just a single building, but a fascinating architectural jigsaw puzzle of houses that the city gradually bought and joined together. I’ll point out one of Bratislava’s best details: a cannonball from Napoleon’s army that remains embedded in the facade to this day—a gritty reminder that this city never simply backed down.

The Salvator Pharmacy is more than just a building with a beautiful facade; it is home to one of the most exquisite Baroque interiors in Europe. I’ll share the incredible story of how this historical treasure returned home after decades of exile, as well as the little but fascinating connection between this site and the tragic fate of the Titanic. It’s a glimpse into an era when pharmacies weren't just shops, but sanctuaries of science and art, restoring a sense of old-world nobility to the city today.
