Birkat Al Mouz is one of Oman’s most beautiful and historic villages, known for its traditional mud-brick houses, lush date plantations, and the ancient falaj irrigation system (UNESCO-listed). The Falaj Al Khatmeen is one of the most remarkable examples of Oman’s ancient irrigation heritage and is proudly listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Located in Birkat Al Mouz, this traditional irrigation system dates back over 1,500 years and continues to function efficiently today. The falaj system works by channeling water from underground sources and mountain springs through a network of narrow channels, distributing it fairly to farms and households. What makes Al Khatmeen special is its precise engineering and the traditional time-sharing system used by the local community to manage water distribution. Surrounded by lush date plantations, the flowing water of the falaj brings life to the village, creating a peaceful and refreshing atmosphere. Walking alongside the falaj offers visitors a unique opportunity to witness how ancient Omani communities adapted to the arid environment using sustainable and innovative techniques that are still in use today.
Enjoy a short 15-minute photo stop at Birkat Al Mouz, where you can take in the stunning contrast between lush green date plantations and the dramatic backdrop of the Hajar Mountains. This scenic viewpoint offers a perfect glimpse of traditional mud-brick houses nestled among palm trees, creating a truly authentic Omani landscape.
