More commonly known as 'Pjaca' the big square is a representation of Split growing in size in Medieval times, as it is not in the Diocletians Palace itself. Each palace on the square represents the spreading as they are all built in different centuries.
As it was formerly a green market, it retained a variation of the name. The most important attractions on this square are the Marko Marulić statue - the father of Croatian literature and the Venetian fortress, a symbol of their rule from the fifteenth century.
