Authentic Calligraphy Experience in Tokyo

1 hour 30 minutes (approximately)
Offered in: Japanese and 1 more

Why This Experience is Special
Leave with a one-of-a-kind piece of art made by your own hand — a souvenir for yourself, your partner, or your family that cannot be bought in any shop.
This is a mindful, Zen-inspired activity held in an atmospheric café in Tokyo — a rare moment of stillness in the heart of one of the world’s most vibrant cities.

The Session
1. The Story of Shodō
A brief introduction to the history of Shodō and how it differs from Western calligraphy — where imperfection is not corrected, but embraced.
2. Learning the Tools
Learn to hold the brush correctly and grind your own ink by hand — a ritual unchanged for over a thousand years.
3. Write a Word That Resonates With You
Choose a kanji meaningful to you — 愛 (love), 夢 (dream), 命 (life) — and paint it on traditional washi paper.
4. Your Name in Kanji
Your instructor crafts a unique kanji name for you or a loved one. Paint it together, side by side.
