We will meet at Place Mohammed V. Please look for your guide, Zoubayr. To make it easy to find me, I will be holding a sign with your name, wearing a blue jacket, standing right next to the central fountain.
We will walk through the ancient gates (Bab El Ain & Bab Souk) into the heart of the blue city. As your guide, I will lead you through the vibrant alleyways, the Andalusian-inspired Square El Haouta, and distinct historic neighborhoods like the Jewish Quarter (El Mellah) and the Muslim Quarter. We will stop by traditional communal ovens to learn about local Moroccan daily life, community bonds, and the city's rich history of religious coexistence.
We will walk through the lively main square of Chefchaouen, lined with cafes and the magnificent walls of the Kasbah. It is the bustling center of the city and a great place to soak in the local atmosphere.
We will stop to admire the magnificent exterior of this 15th-century fortress located in the main square. I will share the fascinating history of the Kasbah, explaining its defensive origins against Portuguese invasions and its critical role in the founding of Chefchaouen. (Note: We will view the impressive exterior and architecture only; we do not go inside, so no tickets are needed.)
We will step just outside the medina walls to discover the city's vital water source. Here, you can listen to the soothing sound of rushing water, observe locals gathering traditionally, and learn about the spring's critical importance to the founders of Chefchaouen.
To conclude our afternoon, we will take a gentle 20-minute hike up the hill to this historic mosque. From a high vantage point, it rewards us with stunning panoramic views of the entire blue city. It is the absolutely perfect spot to take photos and watch the beautiful afternoon light blanket the medina.
