Discover Matsumoto through a local's perspective on this city walking tour. This castle town is made up of distinct areas each with its own characteristics. Come take an easy two hour walk with us and learn about Matsumoto City's history, culture, natural landscape, and how it has played a significant role in Japan. We'll lead you down the main areas as well as some off the beaten path areas, drink from some natural spring water wells, check out a hidden shrine, see a 360 degree city view and more.
For travelers being picked up at Matsumoto Station, please wait outside the Vie De France Bakery on the first floor. If you're facing the station it is on the left hand side of the stairs and escalators.
Nunoya Ryokan (traditional Japanese inn) is located on Nakamachi St. It is located across the street from Side Car (bar). We will meet you outside the building.
A brief walk through Nakamachi St and discuss the history of the white walled storage houses that line the streets. We'll then head to a hidden local shrine that has significant meaning to the locals.
A walk along Metoba River to the Agetsuchi area. This area has western influenced architecture and is very different from Nakamachi. The area was influenced by the Taisho Roman era of the early 1900s. We'll discuss how this era influenced fashion, food, and lifestyle in Japan.
We'll head to the "BackTown" of the Higashimachi area called Uramachi. This slightly grittier area was the red light district and has a colorful past.
We'll walk around the Matsumoto Castle area and head to a secret location that has spectacular 360 degree views of the city, the castle, and the mountains (only available on weekdays).
A brief walk through Umadashi, an area that played a significant role in the defence tactics of the castle. We'll then take a look inside a traditional Japanese sweets shop and grab a snack. Then head to Nawate St and walk along Metoba River.
We'll head to Yohashira Shrine of the Nawate area in the city center and do a proper Shinto greeting.
