Sigiriya The Ancient Rock Fortress
Set off this morning for Sigiriya, also know as the 'Lion Rock' (approx 45 min) The UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the Sri Lankas major attractions. Sigiriya rises dramatically above the surrounding landscape and is one of Sri Lanka’s most remarkable ancient archaeological sites. The 5th-century royal citadel was developed during the reign of King Kashyapa I (477–495 AD), with a palace complex built on the summit of the rock. Explore the beautifully landscaped gardens, ancient water features and historic pathways before ascending towards the famous Lion’s Paws. Along the way, discover the renowned Sigiriya frescoes and the ancient Mirror Wall, before continuing towards the summit and the remains of the royal palace. The summit,covering an area of 1.6 hectares was originally completely covered by buildings,but only remains of the royal citadel can be seen today.
